Don't Keep Your Customers Chained To Your CompanyDate: Tue, 15. May 2012 08:17:22
Over the last few weeks, I decided to be brutal and unsubscribe from a whole bunch of emails that I just wasn't reading. Some were from retailers I know an trust, others from places I gave my email to when I ordered something. The unsubscribe experience went from the sublime to the infuriating. For some, all it took was a simple click. Others wanted me to jump through more hoops than a show dog. And some are still sending me emails, despite taking my name off the list. This is bad. Read more on why you should always give customers and easy way out. Can Advertising Employees Really Be Fearless in This Economy?Date: Fri, 25. February 2011 08:30:37

Alex Bogusky, former Chief Creative Insurgent at Crispin, Porter & Bogusky, has said often that fear is the mortal enemy of creativity. His new project, Fear Less, is focused on that. He has also said that we need to be fearless, as copywriters, art directors, account planners and so on, in order to do the best work possible. That's all great in theory.
But this is 2010. The economy is still in the tank, jobs are scarce and lay-offs, especially in advertising, are common. It's easy enough to be fearless when you have a few million bucks in the bank, but is that same attitude even possible for the average advertising professional?
In my opinion, it's tough. Very tough. With a family to support, having no fear of losing your job or upsetting the client is not smart. No one is bulletproof, and everyone has a breaking point. Putting any ad, whether it's a radio spot, billboard or direct mail piece, ahead of putting food on the table and paying your mortgage, is just a complete failure to recognize real priorities. Of course, it is important to have standards, but not at the cost of your livelihood.
So, if you do find yourself adopting Bogusky's "fear less" attitude, remember to keep some perspective. Bogusky can be fearless because he has a huge financial safety net. Yes, he built it by being fearless, but as he was building it he compromised on more than one occasion. Use your head. Be a good advertising professional, but be practical. It's no use having no fear if you have no job.Can Advertising Employees Really Be Fearless in This Economy? originally appeared on About.com Advertising on Wednesday, November 17th, 2010 at 00:40:38.Permalink | Comment | Email this
